Dye Sublimation
Quality Printing For Fabric and Canvas
Modern Images have invested in the latest Dye Sublimation print technology to equip our
studios with all the versatility needed to produce a complete range of products based on
printing to canvas and other fabrics to make up our own designer items and interior
decoration accessories - and to provide the very best in custom printing supplied direct to
you.
Dye sublimation uses a unique printing methodology that differs from traditional ink jet
systems and gives a fantastic finish that will not degrade or fade in the way that normal
inkjet printing can.
Printing with dye sublimation differs greatly from inkjet in many ways, most significantly
in quality. Dye-sub is known for its high quality and continuous tone output.
Continuous tone means that all the gradations of colour are used when creating an image. For
example, when creating a grey scale, from black to white, a continuous tone printer will
show all shades of grey in between the black and the white by actually printing them.
By contrast, a half-toning device such as an ink-jet printer will use a dithering technique:
placing dots close together to trick the eye. In other words, in greyscale, ink jet printers
use a series of black dots placed close to white dots in order to trick the eye into
blending the pixels when viewed. With magnification, the difference can be seen clearly. The
dye-sub output is clear and sharp, but news-photo type dots will be visible on the ink-jet
prints
Today's Dye Sublimation process has evolved since it was first seen in widespread use in the
1960s and now involves better fusing of inks deeply into the fabric fibres, which not only
gives the finished work the vibrant colours that are the defining feature of 'dye-sub
printing' but also - because the ink is actually fused with the individual fibres of the
material - means that the surface can be cleaned and washed safely and easily.
Dye sublimation is a frontrunner print technology with exciting benefits for interior
designers, giftware producers and any artists and photographers looking for new ways to
display their work as art on canvas.
